The idea of Internet marketing is based on the way that you reach your customer base. But this process is best started with understanding just who you're actually targeting.

Defining your target audience

1 in 10 people are using the Internet to learn about something. So for every ten people that use the Internet, eight of them are putting a search term into a search engine to find matching results. When you're a business on the Internet, you want to be able to match up with a customer's query in order to get their business. This is why defining your customer is so important.

You need to clearly understand what your customer is looking for and how you can provide for them. For example, if you are selling computers, you will want to understand whether your preferred customers are looking for better technology or lower prices – that's a big difference. If your customers are looking for lower prices, but you advertise better and faster technology, you aren't targeting your customer base.

Ask yourself what your customer wants from you and how you provide this. Back to the example of the computer sales, what are your products featuring and what makes you different from your competitors? Are you able to offer refurbished items for a discount?

Are you able to offer a better service plan? When you determine the benefits of your business, you can then advertise these features to attract the customers whose needs match your business's abilities.

You need to choose the customer that is truly interested in your business in order to get the maximum ROI (return on investment) that you can. It's not about getting the most people to see your website – it's about getting the most people buying your product or service.

After you've defined a customer

Once you're determined what your customer is looking for, you will want to determine how they are looking for that item. Are they going to search engines? Do they look at advertisements on related websites? You need to know where your customers are at so that you can be there, offering your services. An effective Internet marketing strategy pushes your business and your products, while also meeting your customers' needs.
